Vision Zero
To Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.
On October 27, 2020, the City of Urbana passed a Vision Zero Resolution which set the goal of
zero fatalities and serious injuries due to traffic violence by 2030. The Vision Zero approach
recognizes that because humans make mistakes crashes will happen, but the total system of
culture and environment can create the conditions such that crashes do not result in fatalities.
Progress toward this goal has been demonstrated in many of the more than 40 U.S. cities who
have adopted the Vision Zero goal. Oslo, Norway (population 697,549) had just one fatality in
2019.
The final two requirements for the City to achieve Vision Zero status are (1) to convene a Vision
Zero Task Force to create the (2) Vision Zero Action Plan with the actions and metrics toward
the goal of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. The task force must include
representatives of the local health, police, and engineering authorities as well as representatives
of the many other community stakeholders in a safe and prosperous Urbana.
