Our Mission
Traffic crashes are a public health issue. Road traffic crashes are a major cause of death among all age groups and the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years. The epidemic of traffic crashes is one that unites us all. People of every class, race, age, gender, faith, neighborhood, ability, and political affiliation have been impacted by this issue.
More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Pedestrians, cyclists, and riders of motorized 2- and 3-wheelers and their passengers are collectively known as "vulnerable road users" and account for half of all road traffic deaths around the world. In this country deaths from roadway crashes for people in motorized vehicles has been declining while crashes that result in the death of a pedestrian or cyclist have been going up. It is possible to change this and that is what People for Safe Streets is working to do.
People for Safe Streets (PSS) is working to achieve zero roadway deaths for Champaign County. The City of Urbana recently passed a resolution supporting the goal of having zero fatalities on our streets. We know it is possible to reach succeed as the community came together several years ago to reduce crashes on the streets of the campus of the University of Illinois. Due to the investment of time, resources, money, and a lot of effort and cooperation there have been no fatalities on the streets of campus for the last few years.
Join us as we work to achieve safe streets for our communities.
